You explicitly featured an image of Megargee’s work on the liner tipping of your depicted hat. But Stetson is so steeped in US culture I was thrilled to pay my respects to just that. If this connects with the Australian cowboy or cowgirl, I would be thrilled. What I hope for my work is that I can be drawing from one area of inspiration, but the viewer can see the work in an entirely new light, from their references and experiences, and it means something new to them. Maybe that was the references I was pulling from, the turquoise jewellery from Arizona, the American vintage suede jacket etc. ![]() Did your Australian background come into the creation of this work? Three practising artists were tasked with promoting the ongoing relevance and contemporary application of the work. However, it soon developed a symbolism that ran through the veins of Stetson and soon became representative of the brand.įor the centenary of the artwork, Stetson refurbished its meaning with some updates. The work was conceived as an advertisement. 100 years ago, the American heritage brand commissioned Lon Megargee to paint The Last Drop From His Stetson (1922). ![]() Born in 1865, Stetson is now 158 years old and counting.
